Off the shelf Orthotics

“Off the shelf” insoles also known as prefabricated or non-casted orthoses, are ready made shoe inserts that are manufactured on mass to fit a generic foot type.
‘Off the shelf’ insoles are devices which are placed inside the shoe to provide the arch of the foot with a degree of support and allow weight along the bottom of the foot to be distributed more evenly. Unlike custom made orthoses, a cast of the foot does not need to taken when using prefabricated insoles.

Using ‘off the shelf’ insoles can be particularly beneficial for the following groups of patients including;

Patients suffering from plantar fasciitis
To prevent ulceration in diabetic neuropathy patients
Patients with deformity
Patients with forefoot pain (metatarsalgia)
Individuals suffering from runners knee
Patients with mortons neuroma

When assessing the effectiveness of ‘off the shelf’ insoles in the treatment of a patients main presenting complaint, I will look at various different factors including patient satisfaction, pain levels, the degree of ulceration present and functional ability.

The following are some of the benefits associated with the use of ‘off the shelf’ insoles;

They are less expensive than custom made orthoses
They are effective when only moderate foot correction is required
Adaptations can be made to the insole according to the patients needs
These adaptations can often be made chair-side if required
They are easily available and therefore there are minimal waiting times

Podiatry for children

Paediatric podiatry is a branch of podiatry which focuses on the assessment and treatment of conditions affecting the foot and lower limb in children.

Paediatric podiatry is a specialist area within the field of podiatry which concentrates on the management of foot and lower limb problems in infants and children.

I am able to treat children suffering from a range of conditions.

An assessment with a paediatric podiatrist may be required if a child is complaining of foot, knee or leg pain and discomfort, if there is concern about the way in which the child is walking or the position of the foot. Some of the most common podiatry related conditions found in children include;

Ingrowing toenails
Heel pain
Flat feet
In toeing
Out toeing
Toe walking
Fallen arches
Sweaty feet

Do you have thickened, discoloured toenails?

Fungal Nail

Fungus could be present, it could also be Psoriasis, trauma or the affect of medications.
A 5 Minute Fungal Test can confirm if fungus is present and give you confidence you are receiving the correct treatment and not spending money unnecessarily.

Fungal Nail Treatments – Depending on the duration of time, amount of nail(s) affected the best options will be discussed at your appointment.
Fungus thrives in dark, moist, warm areas such as shoes, likely the infection cause. Fungal particles can shed; therefore, cross contamination can happen. Most fungus survive by eating skin and nails, dust contains our dead skin cells so fungus can be quite happy sitting in corners of the floors in our homes.
All advice on how to reduce the chance reinfection and to protect your household from contamination with be given verbally and in a take home leaflet.

Verruca Treatments

Verruca

Verrucas are caused by the HPV virus and are incredibly stubborn to get rid as the body’s immune system does not know the verruca is there. Verrucas usually disappear without treatment but can remain for a long time and be painful.

At SK Podiatry, I offer a number of different treatments that can help to get rid of them more quickly.

Salicylic Acid ( higher % than over the counter)
Silver Nitrate
Cryotherapy
Verrutop (painless treatment of difficult warts that is highly effective. Not suitable for diabetics, pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under the age of 6 years).
